why are gaps are left in between rails while laying a railway tracks?

so that there are enough spaces for the wheels to fit on the tracks

Because metals get expand on heating. If we does not leave the gap in railway line the track will collapse on each other in summer. On cooling metals gwt contract and get back in the size.
