Why are giant and supergiant stars rare?

Helium flash is caused by the ignition of helium fusion in a core that contains degenerate electrons.

Pressure does not depend on temperature for a white dwarf because the electrons are degenerate. Why are giant and supergiant stars rare to observe? The giant or supergiant stage is very short.
