why are gold and silver not used for making electrical fittings ?

Copper is a much better conductor than gold, and silver is the best conductor of all at normal temperatures. Silver is not used as wiring simply because of the expense, and gold because copper is much more efficient and cost effective.

Silver has the highest conductivity of all metals, but although a lot cheaper than Gold, it STILL costs about 60 times as much as Copper. In addition to that, Silver is chemically highly active which is something you don’t want to have in a wire.

Aluminium (or Aluminum as some parts of the world insist to call it) is sometimes used in wires as it costs only about a third of Copper with roughly half the conductivity, which makes wires slightly cheaper.

But Aluminium forms an Oxide layer with bad conductivity on the outside so most of the times it’s plated with Copper to make up for that.
