Plants are called autotrophs as it produce its own food by using the water, light and carbon dioxide, since they produce their own food they are called as producers.
All plants or the autotrophs use energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil in to glucose, which gives plant energy and is also utilized in the synthesis of cellulose by the plants which is used to grow and build plant cell wall.
Autotrohs are play an important role in the ecology as they are food source for heterotrophs. Example of autotrophs are plants, some bacteria and algae.
