Plants are called producers. This is because they produce their own food! They do this by using light energy from the Sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil to produce food - in the form of glucouse/sugar. The process is called photosynthesis.

  • Chlorophyll allows the plants to trap solar energy and convert it into chemical energy.
  • In the whole ecosystem only green plants can do that.
  • Food produced by plants are taken up by primary consumers.
  • Secondary consumers derive nutrition from primary consumers, and so on.
  • Thus all the consumer organisms in an ecosystem get energy directly/indirectly from the trapped solar energy stored in plants.
  • This is why plants are called the producers.

why only green plants ?

  • Green plants are the organisms which have the green pigment chlorophyll .
  • So , they can synthesize ( or produce ) their own food using sunlight , carbon dioxide and water by the process of photosynthesis .
  • So , only the green plants are called ' Producers.

hope it helps !!
