Heavy elements have heavier nuclei. There is a force called nuclear force that holds neutrons and the protons together in the nucleus.
The nuclear force varies with distance .When the distance from the center of nucleus becomes larger then the nuclear force between protons and neutrons become weak and hence the heavy elements become unstable.
