a. Population densities are below 250 persons per sq. km in states like Jammuand Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh,Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc.

b. Rugged terrain and unfavourable climatic conditions are primarily responsiblefor sparse population in these areas.

the area is not suitable for settling because of the steep slopes hence the soil might be infertile which discourages farming thus without food people cannot survive
