‘ Ice’ has been used both  literally and symbolically in the poem . Ice is a concrete force that can destroy the world through its intensity. Symbolically ‘ice’ represents the cold feelings of hatred, jealousy, apathy and selfishness.  These negative emotions  can turn human beings in to beasts , who will readily destroy one another.  Thus ‘ice’ and ‘hate’ are juxtaposed in the poem as forces of destruction .
