Inert gas elements have their outer most shell completed or full. So they have no tendency to enter into any chemical reaction by giving or receiving electrons. Hence, inert gasesare chemically inert and placed in zero group (Group-viii) in the periodic table.Inert gases with zero valency.

The noble gases are colorless, odorless, tasteless, and nonflammable under standard conditions. They were once labeled group 0 in the periodic table because it was believed they had a valence of zero, meaning their atoms cannot combine with those of other elements to form compounds.
