Why are insects attracted towards light bulbs?

merlina: hii
merlina: The bugs attracted to the porchlight, of course! ... One of the most popular theories holds that positively phototactic insects are drawn to lights because they act like a navigational guide. Manyinsects find their way by keeping a natural light source, such as the Sun or the Moon, at a constant angle.
yuvrajkj: you can answer
yuvrajkj: but thats complex
yuvrajkj: i want simple answer
yuvrajkj: not copied
shraddha33204: A phenomenon called phototaxis explains how organisms respond to light with motion
shraddha33204: man-made lights, such as a campfire or your porch light, the angle to the light source changes as a moth flies by.
shraddha33204: This confuses it. “The thinking is that they become dazzled by the light and are somehow attracted,”
shraddha33204: they r actually confused btwn man made light and moon light

In a behavior called transverse orientation, some insects navigate by flying at a constant angle relative to a distant lightsource, such as the moon. But around man-made lights, such as a campfire or your porchlight, the angle to thelight source changes as a moth flies by. This confuses it.

thanks
