In ionic compounds, the electrostatic interactions between cations and anions holds the compound together. Because these are very strong interactions, it takes lots and lots of energy to separate the ions. Because that's how ionic compounds melt, they have higher melting points.

IONIC COMPOUNDS HAVE HIGH MELTING POINTS BECAUSE THE ELCTROSTATIC INTRACTIONS THAT HOLD THE COMPOUNDS TOGETHER ARE VERY STRONG.
