Ionic compounds are formed as the result of the formation of positive and negative ions. ... The atom which forms a positive ion loses electrons to the atom which gains electrons to form a negative ion. A compound is not stableunless the number of electrons which are lost and gained are equal .

According to fajans rules which are stated in chapter chemical bonding.

It says the energy required to break the bond of an ionic compound is more than that of a covalent compound.

The reason can be explained by example of nacl...

In nacl we have two ions of
Na+ and cl- and attraction takes place between two opposite charges so as a result they make a strong bond.

Hope it helps.
