Spines help prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus and providing some shade. In the absence of leaves, enlarged stem.

hey mate here it is....

the leaves of cactus are reduced to spines to reduce water loss from it.If cactus would have leaves it would increase its surface for evaporation of water in dry desert where rate of evaporation is much faster....
