India ranks number 1 in the production of jute products of which around 81 % is produced from the mills that lay along the Hugli River. The main reason for concentration of Jute factories around the Hugli River are: West Bengal is the highest producer of raw jute. Jute manufacturing requires a lot of water. Locating factories near the river ensures ample supply of water to the factory It also ensure easy import of goods required for the manufacturing of jute products and exports of finished products They also get cheap labor from neighboring states bihar and Orissa
