Curves and large bends or loops formed by rivers in the plains are known as meanders.
Meanders are mostly found in the northern plains because the most of the rivers come from the northern mountains and these rivers carry a huge amount of silt with them and deposit it in the northern plains. This silting creates meanders in the northern plains region. As the river enters into the plain area, the speed of the river is slowed down and the water flow is also reduced to greater extent and the river widens. As the flow of river slows down, it is not able to carry the eroded material brought from the mountains. The northern plains are flat land, where there is flow of water is less. So, the meanders are mostly found in this region.
