Why are metal chains are wrapped on tyres when they run on icy roads?

because the smooth or icysurface reduces friction that is why if we apply breaks the truck does not stops.for increase friction the iron chains are wrapped on the tyres of trucks inicy areas.which increases the grip and increase friction.which helps the car to stop after apply breaks in icy areas.
