Why are metalic bodies of electric appliances connected to the earth wire?

metallic bodies of electrical appliances is connected to earth wire because earth wire has zero potential and in case if there is a current leakage from the appliance it can go to appliance to earth instead of going human body to earth

1. If due to faulty appliance , the live wire comes in contact with the metal case of the appliance, the appliance acquires the high potential of the live wire .

2. The person touching it will get a fatal shock because current flows through the body to the earth .

3. But, if the earth wire is connected , then as soon as the live wire comes in contact to the metallic case, a heavy current flows to the earth through the case of the appliance and the fuse connected to the appliance blows off and the appliance gets disconnected .
