Mitochondria and chloroplast are the only two cell organelle that have its own set of DNA.
This is why they can perform their own mode of replication which is partially independent of the cell division.
Hence they are called semi autonomous organelles.
Mitochondrial DNA is also inherited from mother to her children and therefore DNA analysis would give the pattern of inheritance by studying the bands in gel electrophoresis.
