Mitochondria was invented by Altman and Benda. But it was firstly seen by Fleming in 1882. In mitochondria there are so many respiratory enzymes by the help of which electrons are transferred and Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP) is formed.
The shape of mitochondria is elliptical and it is a semi autonomous cell organelle surrounded by two membranes.
As respiratory enzymes generate energy in the cell so mitochondria is called Powerhouse of the cell.
In mitochondria the energy of foodstuff's molecules transform into useable energy and stored in the form of ATP molecules which is the source of the body of the organism.

➪ We all need energy for performing different functions like to breathe etc.. Mitochondria is the cell organelle found inside the cytoplasm of all the eukaryotic cells except mammalian RBCs. This is the site of production or releasing energy from pyruvic acid in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is the molecule of releasing energy or the energy currency of the cell through the process of cellular respiration. Thus, it is known as the powerhouse of the cell.
