why are most carbon compounds poor conductors of electricity?

because carbon compounds are mostly non metals and they cannot conduct ions to flow electric current.

carbon has the property of catenation ;that is , to form compound using all its four valence electrons.
except for graphite, which is in hexogonal planar arrangement and has free electrons, all other carbon compounds are lacking fre electrons to carry the charges. so, the are poor conductors.
