Elements will try to 'loss or gain electrons' from their outer shells to satisfy the octet rule. Many elements have a great tendency to combine with each other to form compounds. Hence, these elements are, therefore, not found in the free state in nature.

Metals not being found in a free state depends on their reactivity. Some highly reactive metals are found in combined state like sodium. Wher as noble and less reacitive metals like gold and silver are found in the free state not chemically combined with any substance. Remember that physical impurities do not make a metal to be in a combined state.
