In the early years, the cotton textile industry was concentrated in the cotton growing belt of Maharashtra and Gujarat due to the following reasons:

Maharashtra and Gujarat were the major producers of cotton.

The moist climate of both the states suited the temperature that is required for the cotton industries (the cotton threads tend to break in dry climate while they rarely break in moist and humid climate).

Gujarat and Maharashtra had ports which helped in the transportation of the finished goods to various locations.

The cotton industries concentrated in maharashtra and Gujarat because :-

  • Black soil is ideal for growing cotton and this type of soil is found in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • Transport facilities is easily available through land, water and air.
  • Climatic conditions are suitable for the growth of cotton.
  • Labour are available and are also ready to work at low wages.
  • Maharashtra and Gujarat have warm and humid climate because of these demands of cotton clothes also rises. Therefore, production of cotton is also rises.
