we get many images of the object because the image formed by one mirror acts as an object for the second mirror. Further images of an image are also formed. This continues till no more reflection by either mirror is possible . This phenomenon is referred to as multiple reflection.

if 2 mirrors are placed at right angles the images formed will be 3 images

Multiple images are formed when two mirrors are placed at right angle to each other because when a ray incident on first mirror from an object it forms an image of the object. This image acts as object for second mirror and then a ray incident on second mirror from the image formed on first mirror, it then also forms image on second mirror. So further image of image are also formed. This process continues till no more reflection by either mirror is possible. This phenomenon is known as multiple reflection. The number of images formed when two mirror are placed at right angle are three.
