Dalits are a group of community people who are socially oppressed, lack education and have different cultural and traditional functions when compared to the urban societies. They are also called as the Scheduled Castes.

The Dalit community is further divided into sub-castes and nomadic tribes. The Dalits among the Dalits are the ones who are severely impoverished, have extreme poverty levels, and are deprived of the basic necessities.

The Hindu-based scheduled castes that are found in Bihar and in Uttar Pradesh are called as Musahars. Their traditional occupation was to catch rats. The Musahars are the lowest of the Mahadalit community living in Bihar and UP states.

The literacy rate of the Musahar community is just 3% and most of them work as bonded laborers. The children work along with their parents as rag-pickers. Their community villages are always affected by malnutrition, malaria, leishmaniasis and other infectious diseases.
