A nail has a pointed tip, so that when it is hammered, the force of hammer falls on a very small area of wood creating a large pressure which pushes the nail into wood.

Pressure is force per unit area. The lesser the area, The more is the pressure. The tips of the nails are made pointed so that the maximum pressure can be generated per unit force applied and hence,the nails can penetrate in an object easily
