why are nails made very thin at one end and somewhat thick from the other end?

Nails are thin or pointed at the end so that area of contact become very less and thus the pressure becomes more. This happens because pressure is inversely proportional to area, so when area is decreased more pressure is exerted which makes the penetration of nail easy.
