Napthalene ball is organic in nature, which means its a organic compound which later undergoes sublimation. They protect various kinds of clothes from insects and moths. The strong smell keeps the insects away, and as it undergoes sublimation, so there is no staining in the clothes, while it disappears or get evaporated, by forming napthalene vapours.
It is because of this same reason that the balls come in tight packaging, so that it does not evaporate.

hope it helps.
