Scientists used to call the noble gases the ''inert'' gases because they believed all of them were inert. They now know that only helium and neon don't bond with or form compounds with other elements; although currently, a team of international researchers are experimenting with two helium compounds that may form under extremely high pressures. The other noble gases do form compounds.
