This is because of the following reasons:
1. Oxygen is a non-metal which is used to respire by humans and animals.
2. Nitrogen is a non-metal which is used in making fertilisers to enhance the growth of plants.
3. Chlorine is a non-metal which is used in the water-purification process.
4. Iodine is used to make 'tincture of iodine' which is used as an antiseptic.
5. Carbon is used as a fuel.
6. Sulphur and phosphorus are used in crackers.

Carbon is used in nanotube and buckyball technology, graphite for pencils, graphene for water filters and more! Nitrogen is used for vehicle airbags (sodium azide), explsoives (TNT), and super-cooling food (liquid nitrogen). Oxygen’s compounds are used for a variety of things including the production of steel and oxygen therapy. Phosphorus is used on the side of matchboxes (50% red phosphorus) and as a deadly weapon (white phosphorus). Sulphur is used for the vulcanization of rubber and gunpowder. Selenium, sometimes considered a semi-metal, is used in rectifiers for old electronics and anti-dandruff shampoo (selenium sulphide)!

Hope this helps!
