Why are'nt atoms considered as smallest basic units of living organisms as cells are even made up of molecules and atoms?

Bcoz atom consist of neutrons.. protons... and electrons..

uzma73: yes i know that atoms are further divisible into electrons,protons and neutrons but then cell is also madeup of large molecules and those molecules into atoms
