Peninsular rivers are defined as those rivers which is flowing in the parts of Peninsular plateau or Deccan plateau in India. These include rivers like Narmada, Krishna, Cauvery, Luni etc.

The Peninsular rivers are seasonal in nature due to following reaons:-

  • These are mostly dependent upon the rainy season and thus not having a permanent source like that of Himalayan Rivers.
  • Peninsular rivers have the small catchment areas and so small basins are there. Therefore, they possess the characteristics of being a seasonal river.
  • If they receive less rainfall in any year of the time period, they dried up and famine conditions are prevailing.
  • Being a non perennial river, they are often termed as seasonal river. They have both the feature of making drought and flood in a particular region.
