People living on mountains are more prone to goitre , as most of them have iodine deficiency. Iodine is a key element in maintaining normal thyroid function, the deficiency of which leads to goitre. In the mountains ,the soil and water have lower amounts of iodine,leading to lowered intake of iodine.
