Because in ancient time people just used to hunt and eat but in today's world there is MONEY!!
And if we have money we have everything.
We can buy anything if we have money! So now a days people can not compromise money for anything not even for their friends. They just want to earn and live their life. No matter if they have to use someone or hurt someone.

The people today are greedy and selfish because in ancient times people did not value money more. They valued values. But in today's world people value money more than anything else, even their families. The people think that with money they can buy anything but with goddess they can't buy or get anything. So they can do anything to earn money. The money they have, the more they are richer. And if they are rich they can buy anything. So they are greedy and selfish.
