Plants are an important part of the biosphere because most of them process carbon dioxide, and release oxygen, through the Calvin Cycle in photosynthesis. The other essential part of plants to the biosphere is that most of them (somewhere around 99.99%) are autotrophic, meaning that they can actually produce their own energy, and even store it, on their own.
They do this through a process called photosynthesis, and while I won't get too deep into it, as it is a very complex subject, I will say that it is an essential part of life as a whole.
Because plants can produce food on their own, they can become a food source for herbivorous animals, who in turn can become food for carnivorous animals, who in turn can often become food for larger carnivorous animals, and so on. The main point here is that plants are some of the most important factors to the food chain, and in turn, life on earth.
