Plants are known as autotrophs since they have ability to prepare their own food.

Explanation:

For survival of living organism nutrients and energy are needed and these two are obtained from food. Based upon the way the organism gets this food, they are categorized as autotrophs and Heterotrophs.

Those species which has the ability to synthesize its own food they are called autotrophs, whereas those which don’t have this ability and are dependent on other for food are called Heterotrophs. Plants are example for former, whereas animals, birds, micro-organism and humans are examples for latter.
