Every food chain begins with a producer. Plants are producers. They make their own food, which creates energy for them to grow, reproduce and survive. Being able to make their own food makes them unique; they are the only living things on Earth that can make their own source of food energy. Of course, they require sun, water and air to thrive. Given these three essential ingredients, you will have a healthy plant to begin the food chain.

Green plants synthesize their own food by the process of photosynthesis. Photo means light and synthesis means to build, so photosynthesis means 'building up by light. It is in the presence of chlorophyll that plants use energy of sunlight to make food from inorganic materials like carbon dioxide and water.k

Food making process in plants is called as photosynthesis and synthesized food is stored as carbohydrates (glucose as well as starch). Plants are known as photoautotrophs or photosynthetic organisms which means that they are able to synthesize their food directly from carbon dioxide and water using energy from light
