Plateaus are called ‘tablelands’ as they resemble table in the sense that they are elevated and high. Basically, "Plateau" is the French word for tableland and as the name resembles, it is the land area which is so flat in nature and that is elevated up above the sea level. They are all not flat completely, but they seems to have very less elevation changes across an area.

Examples of major plateau in India include the Deccan plateau and the Central Highland.
