Answer:

About hundred years ago, there were few countries in the world that had political parties. Nowadays, however, political parties have become an essential part of democratic form of governance and there are very few countries in the world that do not have a multitude of parties. For most ordinary citizens, democracy is equal to political parties. They might not know much about the Constitution and the nature of the national government, but they often know many details of the local and national political parties. Therefore, political parties are effectively one of the most visible institutions of democracy.
