Political parties are vehicles through which like-minded politicians and activists can pursue ideological objectives (Left, Right or Centre), they provide a clear ballot option to voters (if you want social justice - vote NDP, Labour, etc/if you want low taxes/privatisation - vote Tory, Republican, etc.), and in a parliamentary system make government-formation more transparent.

The Functions of Political Parties. Political parties perform an important task in government. They bring people together to achieve control of the government, develop policies favorable to their interests or the groups that support them, and organize and persuade voters to elect their candidates to office.
