Lots of problems in real life and in geometry actually based on polygons.
Let me give you some examples as a computer engineer:
For example, each country or a city in a map is shown as polygons to show their bounds. We can represent them using polygons.
Another example, in a computer game, we have to find that any two or more objects are colliding or not. It is important because if there is computer game triggers a different action. Each game object is represented as a simple 2D or 3D polygon. Using some algorithms in computational geometry it is not so complex to determine it.
