Sodium and potassium are very reactive metal and readily catches fire in the air. They cannot be kept in water as they react exothermically in water. Therefore they are stored in kerosene as they are don't react with kerosene.

hope it helps...

Question

Why are potassium and sodium stored under kerosene oil?

_____________________________

Answer

  • Sodium and potassium are usually stored under kerosene oil to prevent accidents that could occur if oxygen and moisture come in contact with them.
  • They are very reactive metals and vigorously react with water present at room temperature and air.
  • This reaction can end up causing fire or even cause an explosive reaction.
  • Therefore to prevent future accidents, we keep sodium and potassium under kerosene.
