Membrane biogenesis can be defined as the process of synthesis of cell membrane or plasma membrane of the cell. The cell membrane is synthesized using proteins and lipids produced in the cell. Endoplasmic reticulum plays a major role in membrane biogenesis.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (containing ribosomes on surface) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (without ribosomes on surface). The rough endoplasmic reticulum is the main site for the synthesis of proteins and while smooth endoplasmic synthesises lipids.
Thus, endoplasmic reticulum acts as main site for synthesis of proteins and lipids which are needed for the biogenesis of plasma membrane.

Explanation:
Membrane biogenesis is the synthesis and production of specific “molecular components” and their assembly into “cellular membranes”.This is a continuous process in which cells are involved in throughout their existence. They keep producing sufficient material for constructing membranes that is present around a cell, known as plasma membrane
