Handmade pieced quilts are usually made from pieces of cotton fabric. The back of the quilt is generally one large piece of a solid color cotton fabric. Between, the old fashioned hand pieced quilt was filled with cotton batting. Wool wouldn’t work as well, because it wouldn’t launder well in a washing machine. Now in some stores, a polyester batting can be found. Once the quilt is sewn together over the batting, the actual quilting process takes place.
