Earth is warmer near the equator because the equator receives energy from the sun at a more direct angle than the rest of the planet.
Near the poles, sunlight arrives at a steep angle, so it must spread out over a greater area.

because the sun's rays hit the earth's surface at a higher angle at the equator. Because the sun is always directly overhead at the equator.
