Rivers can be used in irrigation. Once human beings started farming, they needed ways to water their crops. Being near naturally running water meant that they didn't need to carry water to their fields manually. The soil near rivers is also fertile, making it good for agriculture.

This is why the river valleys were important to Ancient Mesopotania!!!!!!!!!!! :D. Good farming conditions made it easy to feed large numbers of people. Therivers that were close by helped provide a good watering source. Eventually, the cities had to make a government.
