The primary function of roots in aquatic plants is anchorage and not absorption. As aquatic plants remains surrounded by water therefore loss of water will not be concerning factor. This is the reason why roots are often reduced or lacking in submerged aquatic plants.

Since aquatic plants are surrounded by water, water containing absorbed nutrients is absorbed all over the plant surface. Hence, there is no need for a root system in aquatic plants to absorb water.
