why are shadow black in colour?

It will be somewhat wrong to say that shadows are black.Shadows are formed when an opaque object comes in the path of light rays.Hence shadows seem to black because it does not emit or reflect any light.

Shadows are formed when a object blocks the ray of light then light can't reach on the other side of the object.It appears black because visible light can't make it's way through the object.And as there's no light falling on it so therefore no reflections.So it looks black.
