Silicon and germanium are metalloids because the have the property of both metals as well as nonmetals . Hence they are called metalloids.

Metalloids generally appear like metals but they are brittle. They have the properties of both metals and non-metals. They are semi-conductors of electricity whereas metal is conductor and non-metal is non-conductor or insulator. Thus, Silicon and Germanium also show these properties, so they are considered as metalloids. Thank u.
