We all know that substances on heating expand and on cooling contract. Hence, during summer the railway tracks expand. If the tracks were kept together, it would bend upward and can cause railway accidents. They are kept with small gaps between them and are connected with 'fishplates'. These allow the tracks to expand and contract.
