Why are some animals likely to survive to adulthood than other animals?

Most mammals, maybe even birds have a better chance of surviving to adulthood because they are cared for by their parents. Insects and reptiles/amphibians are not cared at all by their parents, so they do not have any protection.
Some of them also have better adaptions and intelligence, which allows them to live longer.Some of them don't have many predators, or live in captivity, having no predators.
